Reeds Spring’s early economy was tied to the movement of ordinary things: timber, produce and people. A National Park Service engineering-history report places the town among the Stone County stations established during railway expansion between 1903 and 1907. The report describes how rail construction created a market for locally cut ties and a way to send lumber out of the region. Rail access also widened markets for farm products. Across Stone County, tomatoes and strawberries could be processed in small local canneries before shipment.
